Fishing may be a hobby for some, but for those with passion for the sport and a drive for success it could be the perfect career path.  Colorado Mountain College in Leadville offers a Professional Fly Fishing Guide Certification program that aligns personal and professional interests to create what some fisherman might consider a gateway to their dream job. We had the opportunity to speak with Mitchell Kincaid, a successfully employed graduate of the program, about his experience with CMC Leadville’s Professional Fly Fishing Guide Certification.

Mitchell is a 24 year old from Johnson City, Tennessee and is currently employed with Colorado Fly Fishing Guides in Leadville. When he isn’t on the river fishing or working in the shop you can usually find him tying flies or hiking around the county. Fly fishing has been a passion of Mitchell’s for 10 years and in the winter he travels back to Tennessee to work in a fly shop at home and fish the streams back east.

Tell us about the Fly Fishing Guide Certification Program in Leadville.

The course takes 6 weeks to complete with classes 5 days a week for about 10 hours a day. It is a lot of work but it goes by quickly and there is a lot of field time on the river. The classes include Professional Guide Skills 1&2, Small Business Management, Entomology, Outdoor Leadership and Fly Tying. The instructors are all very skilled, knowledgeable in their fields and eager to teach.

How did CMC Leadville contribute to your current employment with Colorado Fly Fishing Guides?

The course contributed greatly to my employment at the shop due to the owner being one of my instructors in the course.

Would you recommend the CMC Fly Fishing Program and why?

I would highly recommend the Colorado Mountain College Fly Fishing Certification Program. Even though I had a decent amount of fly fishing experience, I learned a great deal more especially the guiding aspect and learning all about aquatic insect life in the Entomology course.

Colorado Fly Fishing Guides is a “genuine small town fly shop and Leadville’s premiere guide service for the Upper Arkansas River Valley.” They are located on Harrison Avenue, just down the road from the Colorado Mountain College Leadville campus and specialize in walk/ wade fly fishing trips and welcome all abilities.
