The snow is rapidly melting and the Arkansas River is currently flowing at more than 4,000 cfs, almost double what the median daily average flow has been for the last 15 years. It was the perfect opportunity for Roger Coit, Outdoor Studies professor at Colorado Mountain College in Leadville, to teach the Swiftwater Rescue Training Course along with instructors Bill MacDougald and Don Smith.

The course was for members of Chaffee County Search and Rescue-North and Chaffee County EMS, which consisted of 13 students who are respondents for river accidents on the Arkansas River.

“One of my favorite roles as a faculty member is providing specialty training for our region’s Public Safety professionals.”, Says Roger Coit, who has been an instructor for Colorado Mountain College since 1998, stresses the importance of being safe and prepared in such a high water year.
