NRM Program Educates Youth
Leadville, CO – The CMC Leadville NRM Program Educates Youth through summer programs.
The Colorado Mountain College – Leadville, Natural Resource Management (NRM) Timberline Field Institute works with several student STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) groups each summer. The primary goal of the STEM programing is to give the NRM students experience with environmental education, while offering the K-12 students incredible STEM based activities. It’s a win-win!
Colorado Uplift is a Denver youth organization involved in the NRM STEM program. Colorado Uplift brings at-risk youth from Denver to the mountains, exposing them to new environments and educational opportunities they would not have access to in urban environments.
The “Rockies Rock” program with the NRM Timberline Field Institute works with local students in the Lake County School District throughout the year, but the program truly shines in the summer. Each “Rockies Rock” group has a theme. The mining group just got back from a hike to the Mt. Sherman mine! They also learned how to pan for gold, perform mine reclamation work and were immersed in the mining history of Leadville’s east side. In the following weeks groups will go fishing, track animals, dissect owl pellets and identify objects under a microscope. We can’t tell who has more fun, the local Lake County kids or the NRM interns.
