Leadville Named Top Colorado Adventure Town

Leadville Named Top Colorado Adventure Town

EOcoverOur secret is out.

Leadville was named the best [mid-sized] Colorado Adventure Town in the November issue of Elevation Outdoors Magazine.  This past fall Elevation Outdoors divided 48 of their favorite active Colorado communities into 3 categories; small, mid-sized, and large adventure towns. They asked readers to participate by voting for their favorites, and narrowed down the winners: South Fork, Leadville, and Fruita.

The competition was stiff, especially in the mid-sized category.  The bracket voting had Leadville up against some seriously adventurous Colorado cities and as the article states, “It was a big coup that the town won this spot in our poll, beating out other supercharged outdoor-sport burgs.”

The issue highlights Ski Cooper| Chicago Ridge, Winter biking with Cloud City Wheelers, The Tennessee Pass Cookhouse and Nordic Center, as well as the Mineral Belt Trail. They also mention two new breweries – Periodic Brewing and Two Mile Brewing –  both soon to be welcomed to the Cloud City in the very near future.

This is by no means an exhaustive list of reasons to love adventure in Leadville, so we thought we might add a few of our favorites.

  1. Leadville Race Series – Leadville is home to some of the most challenging competitive races in the country. Endurance athletes travel from all over the world to compete in marathons, half marathons, 50 or 100 mile running/cycling races, and high altitude training camps.  Leadville takes competitive athletics to the next level and Race Series internships are often available to interested CMC students.
  2. 10th Mountain Division Winter Hut Trips – Leadville is surrounded by the largest ski hut system in Colorado with 350 miles of backcountry trails and 34 huts. Cross-country skiers and snowshoers of all abilities are sure to satisfy their adventurous appetites trekking to these backcountry bungalows, whether it is for a one night family trip or a multiple hut-to-hut holiday.
  3. Outdoor Recreation Leadership map

Adventurous Education – Now we may be a bit partial here, but how great is it that you can get a degree in outdoor education or outdoor recreation leadership, in one of the top adventure towns in Colorado? Colorado Mountain College in Leadville offers top notch outdoor programs where students take classes like, “Backcountry Winter Travel”, “Snow Orientation”,  and “Whitewater Paddling Leadership”. Leadville is the perfect location to attend an authentic Colorado #AdventureCollege.

  4. Leadville Ski Joring – Once a year, Harrison Avenue is blocked off so horses and riders (galloping at a swift pace) can pull skiers through a street course which includes jumps, gates, and rings.  Ski Joring is a favorite event for locals and visitors alike. This adventurous and quirky tradition has been celebrated in Leadville since 1949, and students in the Ski Area Operations program at CMC assist in course planning and building.
  5. Professional Fly Fishing Guide Certification

Headwaters of the Arkansas River – The Arkansas Headwaters Recreation Area is one of the most popular locations in the country for whitewater rafting, kayaking and fly fishing, and it all begins in Leadville. CMC students and graduates are involved in the river recreation industry, and work for local companies like Colorado Fly Fishing Guides and the many rafting outfitters in the area.

We could go on and on talking about Leadville adventures, but where’s the fun in that? Get out there and experience all the adventure that Leadville has to offer and share them with us using the hashtag #LeadvilleAdventures.
