The 2017 Colorado Cup Snowshoe Race will be held at Colorado Mountain College Leadville on Saturday, January 28, 2017.
By Coach Darren Brungardt
The 2017 Colorado Cup Snowshoe Championship is an exciting set of races for family, friends, teams, experts, and novices. The race will traverse through the trails around Colorado Mountain College. Awards will go to the top three male and female finishers in all of the sprint races, boys and girls high school top 5 in the 5K, and age group winners in the 10K (20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60+). The 5K race also serves as the CO high school 5K Championships. The top high school boy and girl team will receive an award for the 5K race based off of typical cross country team scoring.
The high school snowshoe state championships are back at Colorado Mountain College in Leadville for the second year. This will be the 7th year that it will be run. Starting in 2010, the race has featured some of the top distance runners in the state of Colorado competing for the individual and team state championship titles. The Leadville course will be run again on the groomed trails surrounding our beautiful campus at 10,000+ feet.
Last year’s race featured a new 5K state record on the boys’ side. Second place girls’ runner, Soleil Gaylord from Telluride, will look to improve on her 2016 finish. She would go on to Utah and win the national championships in 2016 for snowshoe racing. Cheyenne Mountain won both the team titles to continue their team legacy.
The World Championships will held for the first time in the US in February. The race takes place in Saranac Lake, NY in February. No qualification is required. The US National Snowshoe Championships will be held in March in Bend, OR. Membership in the USSSA is the only requirement. More information on these races can be found at snowshoeracing.com
Racers often ask about training for snowshoe racing. It is really easy: the training that you do for track is all that you need! It is helpful to get out on the snow every now and then, but it is not required. We will have some snowshoe loaner pairs from Crescent Moon Snowshoes out of Boulder. Coaches and parents are welcome to race too.
Race distances will be:
Sprinting events: 200-800 meters. We will have to map out the loop to get an official distance after the track has been groomed this month.
Relay: we did a medley last year that was really fun.
5K: this race will be scored cross country style for the team title. A team consists of five runners.
10K: do the 5K loop…twice!!!
Race profits will go directly to the CMC Running Club. Race registration and contact information can be found on runningclub.coloradomtn.edu. Register here!
