If you drove Highway 24 through Leadville on Saturday March 24, 2018, you may have seen a large crowd congregating at the base of the Dutch Henri Hill. They weren’t there for the usual weekend tubing activities, but instead were cheering on their favorite competitors for the 14th annual Cloud City Rail Jam.

“There were 31 competitors and about 75 spectators who came out on Saturday,” says Maddy Pierce, a Ski Area Operations student from Piseco, NY, “We feel very successful about the event as we beat most of the previous classes records for attendance.”

This was also the first class to tackle a pond skim. With temperatures in the mid 40’s and sunshine beaming down on the course, conditions were ideal for this entertaining feature. They even added specific awards for those brave enough to attempt the pond skim including best men’s trick, best women’s trick, and best crash.

Each year, students in the Events Management class are responsible for hosting the Cloud City Rail Jam and receive a grade for their involvement. They learned firsthand about every element that goes into planning and executing a rail jam, including designing the course, building features, sponsorships and promotions. Students also practice problem solving skills as they swiftly responded to common issues to faciliate a successful event.

“The biggest challenge was getting judges and adjusting for last minute changes,” says Maddy, “We had one judge bail last and another show up late. We found a quick solution and it went on without another hitch.”

Top prizes included Nordica Skis from Christy Sports, skis from Liberty Skis, snowboard from CMC Steamboat, season pass from Ski Cooper, a hut trip for 4 from Weston Pass Huts, and a hut trip for 4 from 10th Mountain Division Hut Association. Competitors jerseys were generously donated by our longtime local sponsor, Dr. Ryde Industries.

Thank you to all the students, sponsors, participants, and spectators who joined in on the fun! Congratulations to the winning competitors. We’re already looking forward to next year’s jam!
