Warren Lewis learned to ski in the Bavarian Alps on Valentine’s Day in 2012 — but it wasn’t exactly a romantic ski vacation. He and his wife were stationed in Germany, while serving in the Army. They took a ski lesson from an American instructor at Edelwiess resort in Garmisch and were hooked.

“After retiring from the Army I wanted to pursue a career in the ski industry,” says Warren, originally from San Antonio, TX, “Knowing that most senior management and executive leadership possess decades of experience, I thought the Ski Area Operations program at Colorado Mountain College would help me gain comprehensive knowledge of the industry quickly.”

Warren enrolled at Colorado Mountain College Leadville in January 2016, and is expected to graduate in May 2018. He recently accepted a job offer with Loveland Ski Area, and is joining their team as Risk Manager in March 2018.

“I will strive to make a lasting impact and meaningful contribution to Loveland Ski Area,” says Warren, “I hope to establish and cultivate an organizational culture that embraces the philosophy that every employee on the mountain is a risk manager.”

At forty-four years old, Warren recognizes the value of education and experience. He has held several positions and internships with Vail Mountain, including work as a lift operator, mechanic, and a summer internship with Vail Lift Maintenance.

“Working in entry level positions provided me with perspective and experience,” says Warren, “Collectively, I felt that the AAS in Ski Area Operations, my military experience and MBA would afford me a promising opportunity to begin a ski industry career.”

The Ski Area Operations program at Colorado Mountain College Leadville provides an experiential based education for students looking to enter the ski industry and build professional careers. Instructors work closely with students to develop skills and hopefully achieve gainful employment upon graduation.

“Warren is an extremely successful student,” says Jason Gusaas, Ski Area Operations faculty at CMC Leadville, “I was happy to recommend him for this opportunity, and am excited for his new role as Risk Manager at Loveland Ski Area.”
