Record Breaking Race on the CMC Campus Trails

A record breaking number of racers stomped down the CMC trails at the 10th annual Colorado Cup Snowshoe Race on Saturday, January 25. There were 92 snowshoers in total, competing in the 5k, 10k and Colorado High School Snowshoe State Championship 5K races. Proceeds from the race will benefit the CMC Eagles cross country running team.

The race also served as a qualifier for competitors and course test for the upcoming 2020 Dion Snowshoes U.S. National Snowshoe Championships. The national races will take place in Leadville Feb. 28-March 1, 2020.

“It was a great trial run for next month’s championship race,” says Darren Brungardt, coach for the CMC eagles cross country running team, “All youth in the 5K and all adults in the 10K qualified.”

Ski Area Operations students prepped and groomed the trails for the race. Though the trails were a bit soft from the fresh snowfall on Friday night, everyone enjoyed the blue skies and afternoon sunshine. Local racers came out in full force, including Leadville’s own Alex Willis, who crushed the course record.

Five Colorado Mountain College cross country team runners participated in the race: Chris Rohlf, Matt Will, Jack Setser, Jason Macaluso, and Caleb Neel. This was their first snowshoe race. The team is focussed on training for the collegiate national title next month.

“The CMC XC team cannot thank everyone enough,” says Coach Darren, “This fundraiser was huge for our team, and everyone was smiling ear-to-ear after the race. We are so thankful for our campus, college, and surrounding communities for the continued support!”
